Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (5), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Marpole and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists L H Langford at 1834 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists L Harry Langford there as the householder, an adjustor for Parsons Brown. The 1940 name section lists James M H Langford at 2020 Barclay Street, a department manager for Boultbee Sweet. F N Langford, rooms to let, is listed at 1215 Bute Street in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Langford (no first name printed) at 1315 Cardero Street. A E Langford is listed at 2760 Duke Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Langford there as the householder, a laborer at BC Sugar.

T Langford is listed at 384 East 38th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Langford there as the householder, a laborer. E B Langford is listed at 2796 East 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edward B Langford there as the householder, a commissionaire.

A E Langford is listed at 4533 Gothard Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Langford there as the householder, a branch manager. R C Langford is listed at 7972 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Russell C Langford there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

L H Langford is listed at 1565 Harwood Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Helen Langford at 6583 Marguerite Street, a maid for H M B Inglis. The 1940 name section lists Robert Langford at 517 Thurlow Street.

Today

4533 Gothard, 1565 Harwood and 6583 Marguerite still have their buildings from before 1946, 1565 Harwood on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1315 Cardero (1957), 2760 Duke (1973) and 384 East 38th (1977) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1834 Barclay, 2020 Barclay, 1215 Bute, 2796 East 6th, 7972 Granville and 517 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
