A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Landstroms

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses

The directories print ten people named Landstrom at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Lindstrom. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Landstroms at 2536 Oxford in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a branch manager, an engineer, a logger, a salesman, a shoe repairer and a stenographer.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Riley Park, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C Landstrom at 2114 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Carl Landstrom there as the householder, a branch manager at Sterling Food Markets. The 1940 name section lists Stan Lindstrom at 210 Keefer Street. Mrs L Lindstrom, rooms to let, is listed at 1906 Nelson Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists O P Landstrom at 2536 Oxford Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Oscar P Landstrom there as the householder, an engineer, with Clarence A Landstrom, who worked for Justice Meat Market, and E Lillian Landstrom, a stenographer for R J Hyndman. In 1940 the directory lists F Lindstrom, a shoe repairer, at 522 Smithe Street. The 1940 name section lists Frans Lindstrom there, a shoe repairer.

In 1940 the directory lists U E Lindstrom at 2155 West 1st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Uno E Lindstrom there as the householder, a logger. In 1940 the directory lists O E Landstrom at 66 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists O Edward Landstrom there as the householder, a salesman at West Point Hardware.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Lena Lindstrom at 116 West Hastings Street, who kept rooms to let.

Today

116 West Hastings still has its building from before 1946, dated 1906 by the City's record; 2114 East 5th (2013), 1906 Nelson (1959) and 2536 Oxford (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 210 Keefer, 522 Smithe, 2155 West 1st and 66 West 23rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
