The Landers

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Lander at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Leander. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Landers at 1454 East 49th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a finisher, a machinist, a maid, a mechanic, a musician and a president. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, Sunset and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A Leander at 1454 East 49th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Andrew Leander there as the householder, a machinist for W J Hodgson, with Howard G A Leander, a mechanic at BC Motor Transportation, and Mildred H C Leander, a finisher at the Jantzen Knit Mills. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A L Lander at 449 East 62nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Annie L Lander there as the householder, widow of W C.

In 1940 the directory lists E Lander at 25 North Templeton Drive. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Lander there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Robert Lander at 1280 Rossland Street as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Alex Leander at 2245 Turner Street, a musician.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs C V Lander at 54 West 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clara V Lander there as the householder, widow of E C, with Edward G Lander, a president at Ted Lander Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Helen Lander at 967 West 10th Avenue, a maid for P J Mackay.

Today

449 East 62nd and 2245 Turner still have their buildings from before 1946; 1280 Rossland (1984) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1454 East 49th, 25 North Templeton Drive, 54 West 10th and 967 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
