What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the 14: a proprietor (2), a clerk, a gardener, a helper, a millworker and a sawyer. Two of them worked for Alberta Lumber.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (4), Strathcona (3), Downtown (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists E Kitagawa at 2751 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Eizaburo Kitagawa there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. In 1940 the directory lists Y Kitagawa at 330 Heatley Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Yoshino Kitagawa there as the householder, a gardener.
The 1940 name section lists S Kitagawa at 556 Powell Street. S Kitagawa is listed at 613 Powell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists S Kitagawa there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Yaichi Kitagawa at 1865 Powell Street.
The 1940 name section lists M Kitagawa at 450 Robson Street, proprietor of Puss-in-Boots. The 1940 name section lists Kazo Kitagawa at 500 Smithe Street, proprietor of K K Konfectionery. In 1940 the directory lists M Kitagawa at 754 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Masujiro Kitagawa there as the householder, a sawyer.

T Kitagawa is listed at 1063 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists T Kitagawa there as the householder, a millworker at Alberta Lumber. S Kitagawa is listed at 2016 Yukon Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Akiko Kitagawa there, with Toshiko Kitagawa.
Today
556 Powell and 1017 West 7th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1017 West 7th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2751 East Pender (2018), 330 Heatley (1972) and 1063 West 7th (1978) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 613 Powell, 1865 Powell, 450 Robson, 500 Smithe, 754 West 6th, 976 West 7th and 2016 Yukon, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
