What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: an apprentice, an attendant, a confectioner, a fisherman, a gardener and a managing director, among others. Two of them worked for Nippon Auto Supplies.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (7), Fairview (2), Hastings-Sunrise and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Tomio Kimura at 409 Alexander Street, an apprentice at Nippon Auto Supplies. Y Kimura is listed at 1177 East Cordova Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Yotaro Kimura there as the householder, a fisherman. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Riyo Kimura at 207 Gore Avenue, proprietor of the Gore Rooms.

In 1940 the directory lists S Kimura at 425 Heatley Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Shigezo Kimura there as the householder, a gardener, with Misao Kimura. The 1940 name section lists N Kimura at 331 Main Street.

K Kimura is listed at 2627 McGill Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Kishizo Kimura there as the householder, a managing director at Canadian Salt Herring Exporters. The 1940 name section lists Hideo Kimura at 551 Powell Street, an attendant at Nippon Auto Supplies.

In 1940 the directory lists Y Kimura at 567 Powell Street. The 1940 name section lists Yoshikazu Kimura there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists Kimura (no first name printed) at 1618 West 2nd Avenue.

M Kimura, a confectioner, is listed at 1649 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Masajiro Kimura there, a confectioner. Mrs M Kimura is listed at 1883 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Masano Kimura there as the householder, with Helen Kimura.

Today

425 Heatley and 2627 McGill still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 409 Alexander, 1177 East Cordova, 207 Gore, 331 Main, 551 Powell, 567 Powell, 1618 West 2nd, 1649 West 2nd and 1883 West 4th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
