The Kilbys

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses

The directories print 13 people named Kilby at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Kilbys at 5114 Fairmont in 1940.

Where the Kilbys lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: an apprentice, an electrotyper plater, a foreman, an oiler, a painter and a plasterer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Renfrew-Collingwood (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F Kilby at 5684 Aberdeen Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick Kilby there as the householder, a painter, with Elsie L Kilby. In 1940 the directory lists D Kilby at 2796 East 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David Kilby there as the householder, a plasterer, with David Kilby Jr, a plasterer, and Ruth Kilby, a saleswoman at Spencer's.

The 1940 name section lists George Kilby at 749 East 18th Avenue, an oiler at Imperial Oil. A W Kilby is listed at 2029 East 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur W Kilby there as the householder, a foreman at Johnston Motor.

F R Kilby is listed at 5114 Fairmont Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick R Kilby there as the householder, an electrotyper plater at the Cascade Plating Works, with Lucille Kilby, and William A Kilby, a plater. The 1940 name section lists R Kilby at 403 Powell Street.

In 1940 the directory lists W Kilby at 3751 West 51st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter Kilby there as the householder, a septic tank inspector at the City of Vancouver, with Glendon T A Kilby, an apprentice for G Wylie. In 1940 the directory lists W Kilby at 3125 West 6th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Kilby there as the householder, retired.

Today

5684 Aberdeen, 5114 Fairmont and 3125 West 6th still have their buildings from before 1946; 749 East 18th (1986), 2029 East 8th (1986), 403 Powell (1947) and 3751 West 51st (1983) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2796 East 16th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
