What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a maid (2), a salesman (2), a canneryman, a houseman and a printer.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kerrisdale (2) and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J H Kershaw at 1234 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John H Kershaw there as the householder, a houseman at the Vancouver Hotel. In 1940 the directory lists J A Kershaw, a printer, at 678 Homer Street. The 1940 name section lists John A Kershaw there, a printer.
The 1940 name section lists Hubert Kershaw at 3785 Maxwell Street, a canneryman. J B Kershaw is listed at 3524 West 16th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James B Kershaw there as the householder, retired.
R Kershaw is listed at 2631 West 1st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Robert Kershaw there as the householder. J W Kershaw is listed at 3040 West 27th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John W Kershaw there as the householder, a salesman at Clarkson's.
The 1940 name section lists Mary Kershaw at 2131 West 44th Avenue, a maid for N Musgrave. The 1940 name section lists Amy Kershaw at 2017 West 45th Avenue, a maid for G K Macpherson. L Kershaw is listed at 305 West Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Louis Kershaw there as the householder, a salesman.
Today
3524 West 16th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1925 by the City's record; 3785 Maxwell (2009), 3040 West 27th (2015) and 2017 West 45th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1234 East 22nd, 678 Homer, 2631 West 1st, 2131 West 44th and 305 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
