The Kendricks

In the city directories 1940 · 16 people at twelve addresses

The directories print 16 people named Kendrick at twelve addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Kendricks at 3371 Findlay in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for 13 of the 16: an engineer (3), a salesman (3), a bookkeeper, a coremaker, a district manager and a helper, among others. Some worked for the same employer: two for Reliance Foundry and two for Vancouver Casket. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (4), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sigrie A Kendrick there as the householder, widow of D W, with Sigrie A Kendrick, a bookkeeper at Vancouver Casket. In 1940 the directory lists H A Kendrick at 1322 East 41st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold A Kendrick there as the householder, a helper at the BC Livestock Exchange.

Today

3014 Kitchener and 2543 Pandora still have their buildings from before 1946, 2543 Pandora on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2440 Dundas (1963), 6125 Vine (1987) and 3150 West 27th (2003) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1322 East 41st, 75 East 7th, 3371 Findlay, 1003 Laurier, 86 North Nanaimo, 1035 Richards and 2428 Yukon, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
