The Katos

In the city directories 1940 · 17 people at ten addresses

The directories print 17 people named Kato at ten addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Katos at 2584 Oxford in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 17: a proprietor (3), a dressmaker, a gardener, a houseboy, a shingle manufacturer and a shoes, among others. Two of them worked for Alma Dressmakers. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (4), Mount Pleasant (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M Kato at 5626 Dunbar Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Masagoro Kato there as the householder, proprietor of Mayfair Products. In 1940 the directory lists Y Kato at 125 East 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Yosokichi Kato there as the householder, proprietor of the Dufferin Rooms.

In 1940 the directory lists T Kato at 258 East 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Tosaku Kato there as the householder, with Akeeta Kato, and George Kato, a houseboy for E S Glaspie. In 1940 the directory lists T Kato at 513 East Cordova Street. The 1940 name section lists Toyotaro Kato there.

The 1940 name section lists H Kato at 527 East Cordova Street, a tailor. S Kato is listed at 791 East Cordova Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sahei Kato there as the householder, in shoes & shoe repairs.

Y Kato is listed at 2584 Oxford Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Yomishi Kato there as the householder, a shingle manufacturer, with Hisa Kato, a dressmaker at Alma Dressmakers, Kiyoshi Kato, a student, and Mrs Toyoko Kato, proprietor of Alma Dressmakers. S. Kato, in shoes, is listed at 338 Powell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ika Kato at 157 West 2nd Avenue, widow of M.

S Kato is listed at 1234 West 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Sadagoro Kato there as the householder, a gardener, with Joichi G Kato, a student, and Mary Kato.

Today

2584 Oxford and 338 Powell still have their buildings from before 1946; 5626 Dunbar (1986), 258 East 46th (1990) and 1234 West 6th (1967) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 125 East 2nd, 513 East Cordova, 527 East Cordova, 791 East Cordova and 157 West 2nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
