A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Jewitts
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at eight addresses
The directories print eleven people named Jewitt at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Jewitts at 1931 William in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a carpenter, a clerk, a diamond setter, a fireman, a machinist and a messenger, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A E Jewitt at 4520 Earles Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). J F Jewitt is listed at 5902 Larch Street in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists J Frederick Jewitt there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. The 1940 name section lists W Jewitt at 318 Main Street.
In 1940 the directory lists C Jewitt at 3434 Turner Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles Jewitt there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists H A Jewitt at 45 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold A Jewitt there as the householder, a machinist at Cylinder Grinders.
In 1940 the directory lists L G Jewitt at 3874 West 21st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Lewis G Jewitt there as the householder, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists P W Jewitt at 3228 West 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Percival W Jewitt there as the householder, retired, with William D Jewitt, a messenger at Dun & Bradstreet.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S J Jewitt at 1931 William Street. The 1940 name section lists Sarah J Jewitt there as the householder, widow of J H, with Ada M Jewitt, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company, and Mildred J Jewitt, a diamond setter at Boyles Bros.
Today
5902 Larch, 45 West 14th, 3874 West 21st, 3228 West 34th and 1931 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 4520 Earles (1990) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 318 Main and 3434 Turner, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Jewitt name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under J. Want a name removed? Tell us.
