The Jacksons

In the city directories 1925–1945 · nine people at five addresses

The directories print nine people named Jackson at five addresses between 1925 and 1945, all on Quebec Street. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Jacksons at 2530 Quebec in 1940. The directories print the name on 115 other streets too, all listed on the Jackson name's own page.

Where the Jacksons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: a saleswoman (2), a compositor, an operator and a warehouseman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Riley Park (4) and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1925 and 1935 the directory lists W D Jackson at 2530 Quebec Street; the 1935 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). By 1940 it is Mrs A Jackson, again in 1945; those lines are marked * too. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Augusta Jackson there as the householder, widow of W D, with Jean Jackson, a saleswoman, and Nancy Jackson, a saleswoman. The 1940 name section lists Leslie Jackson at 3870 Quebec Street.

In 1940 the directory lists W Jackson at 4447 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists William Jackson there as the householder, a warehouseman. In 1940 the directory lists J Jackson at 4747 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists John Jackson there as the householder, a compositor at the Sun, with Margaret G Jackson, an operator at the BC Telephone.

In 1940 the directory lists A H Jackson at 4969 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists Alfred H Jackson there as the householder.

Today

3870 Quebec, 4447 Quebec and 4747 Quebec still have their buildings from before 1946, 4447 Quebec on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 4969 Quebec (1994) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2530 Quebec, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under J. Want a name removed? Tell us.
