What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: an attendant, a conductor, a driver, an engineer, an on active service and a salesman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (3), Riley Park (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise and Kensington-Cedar Cottage. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Isherwood at 469 East 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Isherwood there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Isherwood at 372 East 41st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Annie Isherwood there as the householder, widow of H, with Maurice Isherwood, a salesman at B&K Economy Cash Stores.

In 1940 the directory lists J W Isherwood at 1248 East 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John W Isherwood there as the householder, on active service. In 1940 the directory lists J W Isherwood at 175 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Joseph W Isherwood there, who ran a service station.

In 1940 the directory lists G W Isherwood at 2560 East Georgia Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George W Isherwood there as the householder, a driver at CN Express. In 1940 the directory lists W N Isherwood at 4349 Knight Street. The 1940 name section lists Walter N Isherwood there as the householder, an engineer.

In 1940 the directory lists J W Isherwood, a service station, at 1695 West 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists George Isherwood at 107 West 8th Avenue, an attendant at Shell Oil.

Today

175 East Broadway, 2560 East Georgia and 4349 Knight still have their buildings from before 1946; 469 East 18th (1987) and 372 East 41st (1968) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1248 East 8th, 1695 West 3rd and 107 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under I. Want a name removed? Tell us.
