What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the 15: a bookkeeper, a director, a helper, a laborer and a seaman. Four are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (5), Grandview-Woodland (3), Shaughnessy (2), Downtown, Fairview, Kitsilano, Oakridge and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Ireland at 1922 Arbutus Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Agnes Ireland there as the householder, a widow. The 1940 name section lists David L Ireland at 1036 Barclay Street, a bookkeeper. The 1940 name section lists John Ireland at 1133 Beach Avenue.

The 1940 name section lists Sam A Ireland at 2054 Dundas Street. Mrs B Ireland is listed at 780 East Cordova Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Blanche Ireland there as the householder, widow of S A. The 1940 name section lists Mary Ireland at 2383 Grant Street, widow of W G.

The 1940 name section lists John Ireland at 1718 Haro Street, a helper at the Burrard Dry Dock. J S Ireland is listed at 960 Jervis Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John S Ireland there as the householder, a director at Ireland & Allan. The 1940 name section lists L Alston Ireland at 1815 Kitchener Street, a seaman.

Today

1922 Arbutus, 1815 Kitchener and 1590 Matthews still have their buildings from before 1946; 1133 Beach (1973), 780 East Cordova (1976), 2383 Grant (1985), 1025 Robson (1980) and 1950 West 35th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1036 Barclay, 2054 Dundas, 1718 Haro, 960 Jervis, 1371 West 52nd, 1283 West Broadway and 239 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under I. Want a name removed? Tell us.
