What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a carpet layer (2), a clerk, a floor layer, an orderly, a proprietor and a saleswoman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Violet M Hussey at 958 Denman Street, a saleswoman at Woolworth's. Mrs M A Hussey is listed at 1776 East 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mary A Hussey there as the householder, widow of J I.

R S Hussey is listed at 1333 East 39th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ralph S Hussey there as the householder. Mrs E M Hussey is listed at 4773 Fleming Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Emily M Hussey there as the householder, widow of H.

The 1940 name section lists Grace P Hussey at 2019 Mannering Avenue, a clerk. In 1940 the directory lists W I Hussey at 1800 Renfrew Street. The 1940 name section lists Walter I Hussey there as the householder, proprietor of Renfrew Service Station & Confectionery.

In 1940 the directory lists E A Hussey at 755 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edward A Hussey there as the householder, an orderly at the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists W Hussey at 3842 West 24th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Hussey there as the householder, a carpet layer, with Joseph W Hussey, a carpet layer.

The 1940 name section lists John Hussey at 3417 West 2nd Avenue. R K Hussey is listed at 3108 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard K Hussey there as the householder, a floor layer.

Today

1776 East 2nd, 3842 West 24th and 3417 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 958 Denman (1955), 1333 East 39th (1994), 4773 Fleming (1994), 2019 Mannering (2007) and 755 West 15th (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1800 Renfrew and 3108 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
