Where the Howeses lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a laborer (2), a clerk, a cook, an engineer, a janitor and a lath grader, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Fairview, Kitsilano, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J L Howes at 1216 East 22nd Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John L Howes there as the householder, proprietor of G & H Specialty. In 1940 the directory lists A G Howes at 1780 East 34th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alfred G Howes there as the householder, a cook.

The 1940 name section lists Ken G Howes at 834 East 57th Avenue, a clerk at E & A Gunther, with Mark F Howes, a laborer. The 1940 name section lists Earl Howes at 2213 Franklin Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles F Howes at 1656 Grant Street, a laborer.

Mrs M Howes is listed at 4556 Harriet Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Martha Howes there, widow of C, with Elizabeth E Howes, a stenographer at the Canadian Government. The 1940 name section lists Mildred Howes at 1622 Nelson Street.

In 1940 the directory lists C T Howes at 1238 Parker Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles T Howes there as the householder, an engineer. In 1940 the directory lists A C Howes at 2245 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Arthur C Howes there as the householder, a lath grader at Canadian White Pine.

In 1940 the directory lists S F Howes at 1545 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Stan F Howes there as the householder, a janitor at Adelaide Court.

Today

1216 East 22nd, 4556 Harriet, 2245 West 13th and 1545 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1780 East 34th (1966) and 834 East 57th (2003) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2213 Franklin, 1656 Grant, 1622 Nelson and 1238 Parker, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
