What they did

The name section prints a trade for twelve of the 16: an attendant (2), a helper (2), an acting police sergeant, a clerk, a maid and a nurse, among others. Three of them worked for CPR.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Shaughnessy, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A G House at 2724 Cambridge Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Gordon House there as the householder, a trainman at the CPR, with Beryl M House, a maid, Gordon J House, an attendant at the Hastings & Dunlevy Service, and Yvonne E House. In 1940 the directory lists H House at 1845 East 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herman House there as the householder, a salesman.

In 1940 the directory lists A W House at 3185 East 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert W House there as the householder, a helper at Forsts. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Cath House at 1146 Harwood Street, a nurse. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ruth House at 1351 Laurier Avenue.

In 1940 the directory lists C House at 751 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles House there as the householder, a clerk at the Liquor Control Board. In 1940 the directory lists A E House at 3224 West 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert E House there as the householder, a superintendent at the Vancouver Machinery Depot, with Frederick W House, a student at UBC, and Hazel E House, a helper for Eden Cafe.

In 1940 the directory lists E J House at 3350 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edward J House there as the householder, an acting police sergeant at the CPR, with Frederick J House, a porter at the CPR, and Neta M House, an attendant at the BC Coast Steamship Service. Today

2724 Cambridge, 1845 East 15th, 751 West 18th and 3224 West 37th still have their buildings from before 1946; 3185 East 3rd (2009), 1146 Harwood (1974), 1351 Laurier (2014) and 3350 West 6th (1987) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1055 West 8th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
