Where the Holms lived

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a millworker (2), a miner (2), a proprietor (2), a carpenter, a cook and a decorator.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Strathcona (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists S Holm at 2457 Adanac Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sven Holm there as the householder, a millworker at Sterling Lumber. In 1940 the directory lists A Holm at 5553 Argyle Street. The 1940 name section lists Axel Holm there as the householder, a miner, with Louis A Holm, a miner.

The 1940 name section lists Magnus Holm at 1136 Clark Drive, retired. The 1940 name section lists Gus Holm at 767 East Georgia Street, a decorator. The 1940 name section lists Nels Holm at 1139 East Hastings Street, a carpenter.

A J Holm is listed at 2526 Eton Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Aug J Holm there as the householder, a cook. Mrs M Holm is listed at 4097 Fraser Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mabel Holm there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Ralph Holm at 1125 Granville Street. In 1940 the directory lists H Holm at 716 Smithe Street. The 1940 name section lists Helma Holm there as the householder, proprietor of the Gresham Hotel.

In 1940 the directory lists I Holm at 1809 Vanness Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ingwald Holm there as the householder, a millworker. In 1940 the directory lists R L Holm at 2839 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Robert L Holm there as the householder, proprietor of the Connaught Service Station.

Today

1139 East Hastings, 4097 Fraser, 1125 Granville and 716 Smithe still have their buildings from before 1946; 5553 Argyle (2013), 2526 Eton (2017) and 2839 West Broadway (1972) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2457 Adanac, 1136 Clark Drive, 767 East Georgia and 1809 Vanness, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
