What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a salesman (2), a chief engineer, a head nurse, a janitor, a mate and a printer. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Clarence Holliday at 530 Burrard Street. Mrs A F Holliday is listed at 3641 Cameron Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ada F Holliday there as the householder, widow of E.

A Holliday is listed at 1135 East 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert Holliday there as the householder, retired. J Holliday is listed at 1036 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Holliday there as the householder, a mate at M R Cliff & BC Mills Towing.

The 1940 name section lists Miss H L Holliday at 2870 Laurel Street, a head nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. In 1940 the directory lists L E Holliday at 1706 Victoria Drive. The 1940 name section lists Lawrence E Holliday there as the householder, a salesman at Shell Oil.

In 1940 the directory lists J Holliday at 1507 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists James Holliday there as the householder, a janitor for Douglas Lodge, with David H Holliday, a printer at Associated Dairies. The 1940 name section lists Norbert D Holliday at 926 West 13th Avenue, a salesman at the Standard Oil Service Station.

F G Holliday is listed at 3575 West 21st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick G Holliday there as the householder, a chief engineer at McGavin.

Today

3641 Cameron, 1135 East 19th, 1507 West 12th and 3575 West 21st still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 530 Burrard, 1036 East Hastings, 2870 Laurel, 1706 Victoria Drive and 926 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
