What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a saleswoman (2), a chef, an employee, a helper, an icemaker and a proprietor, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (5), Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Miss E Hills at 1065 Bute Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Edith Hills at 1086 Bute Street as the householder, a saleswoman. In 1940 the directory lists A E Hills at 631 East 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert E Hills there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Eva Hills at 804 Nicola Street, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company. W E Hills is listed at 275 North Kootenay Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William E Hills there as the householder, a helper at C R Co, with William S Hills, a salesman at Maple Avenue Market.

Mrs J Hills is listed at 3462 Point Grey Road in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jane Hills there as the householder, widow of C W, with Charles A Hills, who worked for Boeings. Mrs C Hills is listed at 784 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Clara Hills there as the householder, widow of H E.

The 1940 name section lists Gordon Hills at 1037 Thurlow Street, proprietor of Speedway Service Shop. In 1940 the directory lists J E Hills at 2144 West 13th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John E Hills there as the householder, an icemaker at Mainland Ice, with John F Hills, a student at UBC.

In 1940 the directory lists G Hills at 3927 West 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Hills there as the householder, a chef at Hedlunds.

Today

1065 Bute, 1086 Bute, 275 North Kootenay, 784 Thurlow, 2144 West 13th and 3927 West 34th still have their buildings from before 1946, 784 Thurlow and 2144 West 13th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 631 East 23rd (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 804 Nicola, 3462 Point Grey Road and 1037 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
