What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: an employee, an insurance agent, a logger, a proprietor and a reporter. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R J Hickey at 4962 Arbutus Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Richard J Hickey there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Andrew Hickey at 1451 Comox Street, an insurance agent.

M P L Hickey is listed at 1344 East 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Michael P L Hickey there as the householder, a logger. The 1940 name section lists William J Hickey at 805 Homer Street. The 1940 name section lists John D Hickey at 1914 Robson Street, a reporter at the Sun.

The 1940 name section lists Veda M Hickey at 914 West 12th Avenue, widow of J. In 1940 the directory lists J J Hickey at 1956 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John J Hickey there as the householder, retired, with Alice M Hickey, who worked for the BC Telephone. The 1940 name section lists Daniel Hickey at 610 West Cordova Street, proprietor of Midway Market.

Mrs E Hickey, rooms to let, is listed at 1046 West Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Hickey there, widow of D F.

Today

4962 Arbutus (2014), 1344 East 2nd (1973) and 1914 Robson (1963) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1451 Comox, 805 Homer, 914 West 12th, 1956 West 7th, 610 West Cordova and 1046 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
