What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the nine: a building contractor, a carpenter, a finisher, a longshoreman, a proprietor and a school teacher.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Henson at 622 East 12th Avenue. F Henson is listed at 516 East 21st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Henson there as the householder, a finisher.

N A Henson is listed at 1224 East 23rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Norman A Henson there as the householder, a longshoreman. F Henson is listed at 776 Homer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Fred Henson there as the householder, proprietor of Cabin Grocery.

P P Henson is listed at 6369 McCleery Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Peter P Henson there as the householder, of Ryan & Henson. The 1940 name section lists Gus Henson at 1374 Robson Street, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Ivy T Henson at 1646 West 10th Avenue, a school teacher.

C W Henson, a building contractor, is listed at 4238 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Henson there, a building contractor, with Norma Henson.

Today

622 East 12th, 6369 McCleery and 1646 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946; 516 East 21st (1983), 1224 East 23rd (1980) and 4238 West 14th (2016) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 776 Homer and 1374 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
