Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J J Heisler at 456 East 38th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John J Heisler there as the householder, a carpenter, with Helen N Heisler, a maid for S A Smith, and Pius Heisler, a bundler at BC Plywoods. In 1940 the directory lists L F Heisler at 1846 East 6th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Loraine F Heisler there as the householder, a cook at the CPR.
The 1940 name section lists J Marcel Heisler at 2022 Granville Street, a laborer. H R Heisler is listed at 1111 Jervis Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hugh R Heisler there as the householder, a salesman at Spencer's.
C M Heisler is listed at 3250 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Claude M Heisler there as the householder, a clerk for Kelly Douglas, with Gerald W Heisler, Jean M Heisler, Pearl L Heisler, a waitress at the Vancouver Parks Board, and Roy M Heisler, a golf pro. J A Heisler is listed at 3394 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John A Heisler there as the householder, a hand checker at the CPR, with Earle L Heisler, a student.
Today
456 East 38th, 1111 Jervis and 3250 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1111 Jervis on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1846 East 6th (1965) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2022 Granville and 3394 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
