What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 17: a butcher, a clean up man, a clerk, a driver, a packer and a saleswoman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Marpole, Shaughnessy, Strathcona, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists J K Hamill at 58 Alexander Street. W J Hamill is listed at 2749 Carolina Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William J Hamill there as the householder, a driver at Johnston National Storage, with William Hamill, a laborer, David Hamill, a butcher at Burns & Co, and Sam Hamill, a clean up man at Canadian White Pine.

W Hamill is listed at 1917 East 35th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Wilkie Hamill there as the householder, a packer at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists William Hammill at 923 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary Hammill at 1129 Haro Street.

The 1940 name section lists Mildred A Hamill at 1610 Salsbury Drive, widow of A W. The 1940 name section lists Nan Hamill at 4261 West 12th Avenue. R Hamill is listed at 318 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard Hamill there as the householder, retired, with Gladys L Hamill, a clerk at the BC Telephone.

The 1940 name section lists David Hammill at 1574 West 2nd Avenue. In 1940 the directory lists A Hamill at 1680 West 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Hamill there as the householder, retired, with Dorothy I Hamill, a school teacher, Howard R Hamill, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company, and Robert A Hamill.

In 1940 the directory lists S Hamill at 66 West 62nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sam Hamill there as the householder.

Today

58 Alexander, 2749 Carolina, 1610 Salsbury Drive and 4261 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946, 58 Alexander and 4261 West 12th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1917 East 35th (1988), 318 West 14th (2003) and 66 West 62nd (2012) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 923 East Pender, 1129 Haro, 1574 West 2nd and 1680 West 40th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
