The Hamers

In the city directories 1940 · 16 people at ten addresses

The directories print 16 people named Hamer at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Hammer. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Hamers at 1920 Pendrell in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 16: a buyer, a chief clerk, a compositor, an employee, a helper and a president, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Strathcona (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H G Hamer at 7430 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harold G Hamer there as the householder, a buyer, with Georgina J Hamer, widow of A V. The 1940 name section lists Edward Y Hammer at 829 East Georgia Street, a president at E Y Hammer Ltd.

M Hammer is listed at 843 East Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mayer Hammer there as the householder, a shoe repairer. H S Hamer is listed at 2192 Parker Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold S Hamer there as the householder, a compositor at Clarke & Stuart.

T R Hamer is listed at 1920 Pendrell Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas R Hamer there as the householder, a chief clerk at the CPR, with David E Hamer, M Gwyneth Hamer, a stenographer, and Theo H Hamer, a stockman at the Marine Sales & Service. P Hamer is listed at 4293 Welwyn Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Peter Hamer there as the householder, with Jack T Hamer, a helper for Sigurdson Millwork.

T P Hamer is listed at 1448 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas P Hamer there as the householder, with Gwladys A Hamer, a student. A E Hamer is listed at 3171 West 28th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Albert E Hamer there as the householder, a salesman.

L S Hamer is listed at 457 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lester S Hamer there as the householder, who worked for Reliance Printers. J Hammer, a tailor, is listed at 977 West Broadway in 1940.

Today

7430 Angus Drive, 829 East Georgia, 2192 Parker and 457 West Broadway still have their buildings from before 1946; 4293 Welwyn (1999) and 3171 West 28th (1994) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 843 East Georgia, 1920 Pendrell, 1448 West 11th and 977 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
