What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: a logger (2), a proprietor (2), a patent attorney, a physician, a sales manager and a salesman, among others. Two of them worked for Herman's Uniforms. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (5), Kitsilano (3), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists E Granberg at 160 Cambie Street, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Leon Greenberg at 328 Carrall Street, proprietor of Leon's Hat Shop. The 1940 name section lists Harry Greenberg at 337 Dunsmuir Street, a patent attorney.

Mrs I J Granberg is listed at 947 East 30th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ida J Granberg there as the householder, widow of O, with Lilly E Granberg, a stenographer at the Hudson's Bay Company. H Greenberg is listed at 16 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists L Greenberg at 561 East Hastings Street.

The 1940 name section lists Arthur Greenberg at 1115 Nelson Street, an upholsterer for A P Madsen. The 1940 name section lists Valdy Granberg at 1229 Odlum Drive, a logger. J Greenberg is listed at 1366 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. Today

947 East 30th, 16 East Hastings, 561 East Hastings, 2676 West 13th and 207 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946; 1115 Nelson (1969), 3057 West 13th (2012) and 3641 West 8th (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 160 Cambie, 328 Carrall, 337 Dunsmuir, 1229 Odlum Drive and 1366 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
