The Gladwins

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Gladwin at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Gladwins at 1441 Thurlow in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eleven: a waiter (2), a physician, a salesman and a school teacher. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Marpole, Mount Pleasant and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alice Gladwin at 2421 Alberta Street, a widow. The 1940 name section lists Mary A B Gladwin at 1531 Davie Street, a student. In 1940 the directory lists Dr J S Gladwin at 5212 Granville Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John S Gladwin there as the householder, a physician.

In 1940 the directory lists Dr J S Gladwin, a physician, at 818 Hornby Street. C A Gladwin is listed at 920 Kingsway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clyde A Gladwin there as the householder, a waiter at the St Helen's Hotel.

M G Gladwin is listed at 1441 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists G Montague Gladwin there as the householder, a waiter at the Yale Hotel, with Esmond S Gladwin, a salesman. Miss A H Gladwin is listed at 1491 West 58th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Aleen H Gladwin there as the householder, a school teacher, with Diana M Gladwin, widow of F.

Today

5212 Granville and 1491 West 58th still have their buildings from before 1946; 920 Kingsway (1975) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2421 Alberta, 1531 Davie, 818 Hornby and 1441 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
