The Gladstones

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Gladstone at seven addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Goldstone. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Gladstones at 3569 West 28th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a stenographer (2), a clerk, a proprietor, a salesman and an upholsterer. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Evelyn Gladstone at 1974 Comox Street, a clerk at the Province. The 1940 name section lists Eleanor M Gladstone at 1201 Harwood Street, a stenographer at London & Western Trusts, with Irene Gladstone. In 1940 the directory lists E Gladstone at 5030 Joyce Street. The 1940 name section lists Edward Gladstone there as the householder, proprietor of Grocery Store.

The 1940 name section lists Winifred M Gladstone at 1877 Pendrell Street, widow of N. The 1940 name section lists R Wynn Gladstone at 1628 Stephens Street, an upholsterer at Dominion Furniture. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L Goldstone at 3569 West 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Lena Goldstone there as the householder, widow of A W, with Arthur W Goldstone, a salesman at the Canadian General Electric, and Gertrude Goldstone, a stenographer for A R Williams.

The 1940 name section lists John Goldstone at 2151 West 3rd Avenue, with John Goldstone Jr, a student.

Today

1628 Stephens and 3569 West 28th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5030 Joyce (1995) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1974 Comox, 1201 Harwood, 1877 Pendrell and 2151 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
