What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a district manager, an employee, an insurance, a police officer, a sewers superintendent and a steward, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (4), Grandview-Woodland (2), Arbutus Ridge, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur P Gillard at 779 Bute Street, with Mrs Lucy Gillard, a waitress at Pall Mall Cafe. The 1940 name section lists C Ingshmn Gillard at 444 Carrall Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Nona Gillard at 367 East Broadway.

H J Gillard is listed at 2336 Grant Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Herbert J Gillard there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone. A E Gillard, a womens clothing, is listed at 643 Howe Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists C T Gillard at 3640 Nootka Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert L Gillard there as the householder, a sewers superintendent at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists A E Gillard at 724 West 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Anselm E Gillard there as the householder, in womens clothing, with Charles A Gillard, a district manager at the Province.

In 1940 the directory lists A Gillard at 2815 West 30th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Gillard there as the householder, in insurance, with Marjorie W Gillard, a student. In 1940 the directory lists A Gillard, in insurance, at 850 West Hastings Street.

Today

2336 Grant, 2748 Pandora, 2144 Venables, 2815 West 30th and 850 West Hastings still have their buildings from before 1946, 850 West Hastings on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3640 Nootka (1967) and 724 West 19th (2020) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 779 Bute, 444 Carrall, 367 East Broadway and 643 Howe, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
