Where the Gateses lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: an auto trimmer, a carpenter, a circulation, a circulation manager, a dairy man and a laborer, among others. Two of them worked for Sun.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Marpole (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Fairview, Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, Sunset, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs W N Gaites at 6435 Chester Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Winnifred N Gaites there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Gates at 1056 Comox Street, a nurse at the St Paul's Hospital.

F C Gates is listed at 2141 East 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Gates there as the householder, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Andrew Gates at 456 East Hastings Street, a timekeeper at Canada Packers.

In 1940 the directory lists C E Gates at 7513 Ontario Street. The 1940 name section lists Clarence E Gates there as the householder, an auto trimmer at Auto House. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Gates at 87 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mina Gates there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists H F Gates at 4645 West 3rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert F Gates there as the householder, a circulation manager at the Sun, with Margaret G Gates, a circulation at the Sun. In 1940 the directory lists H C Gates at 1535 West 63rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert C Gates there as the householder, a dairy man at Guernsey Breeders Dairy.

The 1940 name section lists Frederick Gates at 1612 West 7th Avenue, a mechanic. The 1940 name section lists William J Gates at 1472 William Street, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists W Gates at 6130 Yukon Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter Gates there as the householder, retired.

Today

2141 East 3rd, 456 East Hastings and 1472 William still have their buildings from before 1946; 1535 West 63rd (1975) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6435 Chester, 1056 Comox, 7513 Ontario, 87 West 14th, 4645 West 3rd, 1612 West 7th and 6130 Yukon, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
