What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the ten: a carpenter, a clerk, a maid and a salesman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (4), Kitsilano (3), Dunbar-Southlands, South Cambie and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Fanny Fryer at 1031 Bidwell Street, a widow. The 1940 name section lists Peter Fryer at 853 Jervis Street. In 1940 the directory lists W H Fryer, in produce, at 451 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists Doreen E Fryer at 947 Nicola Street, a maid at the Georgia Hotel.

The 1940 name section lists Fryer (no first name printed) at 1137 Robson Street. L W Frayer is listed at 3361 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Lauren W Frayer there as the householder, a salesman at the Hudson's Bay Company.

J L Frayer is listed at 2945 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John L Frayer there as the householder, retired. Mrs G A Fryer is listed at 735 West 16th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gladys A Fryer there as the householder, widow of S.

J B Fryer is listed at 3367 West 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James B Fryer there as the householder, a carpenter at Canadian Pacific Steamships. T V Fryer is listed at 3365 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists T Vivian Fryer there as the householder, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal.

Today

3361 West 10th, 2945 West 14th, 3367 West 22nd and 3365 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 947 Nicola (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1031 Bidwell, 853 Jervis, 451 Main, 1137 Robson and 735 West 16th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
