Where the Fitchetts lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a laborer (2), a steward (2), a carpenter, a mechanic and a sawdust coal.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs G A Fitchett at 966 East 38th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Grace A Fitchett there as the householder, with Ken Fitchett. In 1940 the directory lists R B Fitchett at 3286 Parker Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Richard B Fitchett there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver, with William R Fitchett, a laborer.

In 1940 the directory lists A S Fitchett at 815 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Adrian S Fitchett there as the householder, a mechanic at Truck Parts & Equipment. In 1940 the directory lists L W Fitchett, a fuel dealer, at 341 West 18th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Leonard W Fitchett there, in sawdust coal & wood, with Lillian Fitchett and Ken Fitchett.

In 1940 the directory lists J A Fitchett at 3142 West 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joseph A Fitchett there as the householder, a steward, with Richard G Fitchett, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists John Fitchett at 1147 West Hastings Street, a steward.

Today

341 West 18th and 3142 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946, 341 West 18th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 966 East 38th (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3286 Parker, 815 West 10th and 1147 West Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
