The Fishes

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at ten addresses

The directories print 13 people named Fish at ten addresses in 1940 in nine of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Fishes at 1316 Walnut in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a salesman (2), a chemist, a clerk, a dairyman, a director of medical records and a factory manager, among others. Two of them worked for East End Dairy. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Marpole, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jessie Fish at 500 Dunsmuir Street, a maid at the Dunsmuir Hotel. A Fish is listed at 8443 Fremlin Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert Fish there as the householder, who worked for Barrett Co.

F J Fish is listed at 1985 Larch Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick J Fish there as the householder, in director of medical records at the Vancouver General Hospital. F O Fish is listed at 6142 Larch Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick O Fish there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver.

H Fish is listed at 1185 Nanaimo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold Fish there as the householder, a salesman at East End Dairy. Mrs E E Fish is listed at 1160 Nicola Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Emma E Fish there as the householder, widow of J N.

The 1940 name section lists James Fish at 2469 Oxford Street, a dairyman at East End Dairy. In 1940 the directory lists J Fish at 4960 Ross Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Fish there as the householder, a salesman at Associated Dairies.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H E Fish at 1316 Walnut Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Hannah E Fish there as the householder, with Elizabeth M Fish, a student, F Mary Fish, a clerk at the BC Telephone, and John L Fish, a chemist. In 1940 the directory lists R C Fish at 878 West 17th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Randolph C Fish there as the householder, a factory manager at A C Rubber.

Today

500 Dunsmuir, 6142 Larch, 1185 Nanaimo, 1160 Nicola and 878 West 17th still have their buildings from before 1946, 500 Dunsmuir and 1160 Nicola on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 8443 Fremlin (2007) and 4960 Ross (1986) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1985 Larch, 2469 Oxford and 1316 Walnut, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
