What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a millworker (2), a clerk, a driver, a laborer, a logger and an operator, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A Fielding at 1020 Chilco Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Allan Fielding there as the householder, a salesman, with Violet W Fielding, a secretary at Addressograph-Multigraph. In 1940 the directory lists E J Fielding at 2117 East 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edward J Fielding there as the householder, a laborer, with L Fielding, a millworker at Hammond's, and Margaret D Fielding.
In 1940 the directory lists C E Fielding at 1134 East Cordova Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles E Fielding there as the householder, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ellen Fielding at 3586 Franklin Street. The 1940 name section lists M B Fielding at 6456 Fraser Street, of Waverley Confectionery.
The 1940 name section lists James Fielding at 569 Hamilton Street, a clerk at Western Wholesale Drug. The 1940 name section lists Louisa I Fielding at 3460 Triumph Street, an operator at Gault Bros. In 1940 the directory lists J Fielding at 2259 West 52nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).
V Fielding is listed at 946 West 6th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Virgil Fielding there as the householder, a millworker, with Ken D Fielding, a driver.
Today
2117 East 6th, 3586 Franklin and 3460 Triumph still have their buildings from before 1946; 1020 Chilco (1952) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1134 East Cordova, 6456 Fraser, 569 Hamilton, 2259 West 52nd and 946 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
