In the city directories 1940 · nine people at seven addresses

The directories print nine people named Fearn at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Fearon. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Fearns at 2952 West 40th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a clerk, an examiner, a grocer, a meat market manager, a purser and a salesman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Sunset (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ralph H Fearn at 3731 Dunbar Street, an examiner at the City of Vancouver. Mrs N Fearon is listed at 227 East 48th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Nettie Fearon there as the householder, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists J Don Fearn at 1661 Harwood Street, a meat market manager at Safeway.

In 1940 the directory lists W D Fearn, a grocer, at 7707 Main Street. The 1940 name section lists William D Fearn there as the householder, a grocer. In 1940 the directory lists O Fearn at 160 Salsbury Drive. The 1940 name section lists Oliver Fearn there as the householder, a sheet metal worker for Walburn Neon.

The 1940 name section lists David Fearn at 2277 West 10th Avenue, a purser at Kingsley Navigation. R T Fearn is listed at 2952 West 40th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ron T Fearn there as the householder, a clerk, with Mrs Bertha Fearn, and Wallace C Fearn, a salesman at T Eaton Co.

Today

3731 Dunbar still has its building from before 1946, dated 1928 by the City's record; 227 East 48th (2011), 7707 Main (1993), 2277 West 10th (1983) and 2952 West 40th (2010) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1661 Harwood and 160 Salsbury Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
