What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the 14: a gardener, a manager, a president, a stenographer and a warehouseman. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Strathcona (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Killarney, Marpole, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Vera Farr at 1048 Barclay Street, a stenographer at Mackay Smith Blair. The 1940 name section lists Dione Farr at 2024 East 13th Avenue, with Edith Farr, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists Kay Noodle Factory Far at 433 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Fred Farr at 860 Hornby Street.

In 1940 the directory lists A Farr at 5841 Kerr Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert Farr there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists F Farr at 956 Main Street.

A M Farr is listed at 4786 West 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A Morice Farr there as the householder, of Ballentine Vivian & Farr. W L Farr is listed at 2161 West 46th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Walter L Farr there as the householder, a president at the Farr Electric Co.

J I Farr is listed at 3784 West 50th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John I Farr there as the householder, a gardener at Strathcona Floral Co. Mrs N L Farr is listed at 1777 West 58th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Nellie L Farr there as the householder, widow of E J, with Edward F Farr, a warehouseman.

W F Farr is listed at 2386 West 7th Avenue in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists G P Farr at 1921 Whyte Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Gordon P Farr there as the householder, a manager at Farr Robinson & Bird.

Today

956 Main, 2386 West 7th and 1921 Whyte still have their buildings from before 1946, 1921 Whyte on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2024 East 13th (1991), 4786 West 2nd (1989), 2161 West 46th (2010) and 1777 West 58th (2018) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1048 Barclay, 433 East Georgia, 860 Hornby, 5841 Kerr and 3784 West 50th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
