A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Farinas
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at five addresses
The directories print nine people named Farina at five addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Farinas at 2304 Stephens in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a stenographer (2), a chief engineer, a driver, a foreman, a nurse and a seaman. Some worked for the same employer: two for UBC and two for Union Steamship Company.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kitsilano, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Pauline Farina at 1056 Comox Street, a nurse at the St Paul's Hospital. A O C Farina is listed at 284 East 18th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists A O Charles Farina there as the householder, a foreman at the City of Vancouver, with Norah Farina, a stenographer at the BC Electric Railway.
P V J Farina is listed at 2304 Stephens Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Patrick V J Farina there as the householder, a chief engineer at the Union Steamship Company, with A John O Farina, a student at UBC, Charles O Farina, a student at UBC, and Patricia E Farina, a stenographer. D P Farina is listed at 3436 West 30th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Dennis P Farina there as the householder, a seaman at the Union Steamship Company.
K Farina is listed at 1616 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kinnis Farina there as the householder, a driver.
Today
284 East 18th, 2304 Stephens and 1616 West Broadway still have their buildings from before 1946, 284 East 18th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3436 West 30th (2016) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1056 Comox, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
