A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Faders
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at seven addresses
The directories print nine people named Fader at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Faders at 742 East 57th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the nine: an assistant manager, a carpenter, a laborer, a mailing, a mechanic and a painter, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Oakridge, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists A W Fader at 4386 Dumfries Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur W Fader there as the householder, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists Edgar J Fader at 523 East 13th Avenue, a mechanic.
Mrs I Fader is listed at 742 East 57th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ionia Fader there as the householder, widow of E, with Admiral R Fader, a laborer at the BC Livestock Exchange, and Dorothy A Fader, a waitress for J B McLeod. H E Fader is listed at 2725 Eton Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert E Fader there as the householder, in mailing at the Sun.
G I S Fader is listed at 3480 Napier Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George I S Fader there as the householder, a painter at the BC Electric Railway. The 1940 name section lists Sam D Faider at 1124 Robson Street, a salesman at E Y Hammer.
In 1940 the directory lists C F Fader at 1367 West 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Carroll F Fader there as the householder, an assistant manager at Blane Fullerton & White.
Today
742 East 57th, 2725 Eton and 3480 Napier still have their buildings from before 1946; 1124 Robson (2002) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 4386 Dumfries, 523 East 13th and 1367 West 46th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
