The Entwisles

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Entwisle at seven addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Entwisles at 1316 Grant in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: an operator (3), a department manager, a foreman, a meat cutter, a watch repairer and a yard foreman. Two of them worked for Canadian-Bemis Bag.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Grandview-Woodland (2), Mount Pleasant (2) and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J Y Entwisle at 6271 Beatrice Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Y Entwisle there as the householder, a yard foreman at Canadian White Pine. In 1940 the directory lists W Entwisle, a watch repairer, at 234 East Broadway.

H Entwisle is listed at 1316 Grant Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harold Entwisle there as the householder, a foreman at Ice Delivery, with Betty Entwisle, an operator at Canadian-Bemis Bag, and Margaret Entwisle, an operator at Canadian-Bemis Bag. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Entwisle at 2009 Grant Street, a meat cutter.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss M L Entwisle at 2620 Hemlock Street. The 1940 name section lists Marjorie L Entwisle there as the householder, an operator at the BC Telephone. In 1940 the directory lists J Entwisle at 2908 Oak Street. The 1940 name section lists John Entwisle there as the householder, a department manager at Canadian Fairbanks-Morse.

In 1940 the directory lists W Entwisle at 60 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Entwisle there as the householder, a watch repairer.

Today

2009 Grant, 2620 Hemlock and 2908 Oak still have their buildings from before 1946; 6271 Beatrice (1980) and 1316 Grant (1976) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 234 East Broadway and 60 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under E. Want a name removed? Tell us.
