The Earls

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Earl at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Earls at 347 West Pender in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: an apprentice, a checker, a longshoreman, a maid, a manager and a mechanic. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale, Riley Park and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Susan Earl at 1734 Dunbar Street, a maid for F R Macdonald. The 1940 name section lists James Earl at 131 East 27th Avenue, a checker at the Sanitary Dry Cleaning & Dye Works. In 1940 the directory lists A L Earl at 2277 East 43rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Andrew L Earl there as the householder, a mechanic.

In 1940 the directory lists W G Earl at 3692 West 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William G Earl there as the householder, a longshoreman. In 1940 the directory lists W B Earl at 2937 West 41st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Wesley B Earl there as the householder, a manager at Vancouver Stove & Heater.

In 1940 the directory lists R W Earl at 3731 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Richard W Earl there as the householder, retired, with Frederick G Earl. The 1940 name section lists Charles Earl at 347 West Pender Street, an apprentice at Uneeda Printers, with James Earl, and Margaret Earl, widow of C.

Today

1734 Dunbar, 131 East 27th and 2937 West 41st still have their buildings from before 1946, 1734 Dunbar on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2277 East 43rd (1963) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3692 West 28th and 3731 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 347 West Pender, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under E. Want a name removed? Tell us.
