What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a salesman (3), a floor layer, a horse trainer, a lineman, a sales manager and a school teacher.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kitsilano (2), Riley Park and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick Dyson at 505 Cardero Street, a sales manager for A B Balderston. E Dyson is listed at 385 East 20th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward Dyson there as the householder, a floor layer. The 1940 name section lists Maxwell Dyson at 896 East 28th Avenue, a lineman at Hume & Rumble.

In 1940 the directory lists G H Dyson at 2254 East 34th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists George H Dyson there as the householder, a school teacher, with Peter G Dyson. The 1940 name section lists George H Dyson at 895 East 51st Avenue, a salesman at the BC Electric Railway. The 1940 name section lists Dyson (no first name printed) at 520 Richards Street.

In 1940 the directory lists G Dyson at 3145 West 13th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Gilbert Dyson there as the householder, a salesman, with Alex Dyson, a salesman at Dustbane Products. The 1940 name section lists Alvin L Dyson at 2574 West Broadway, a horse trainer.

Today

385 East 20th and 2574 West Broadway still have their buildings from before 1946; 896 East 28th (1979), 2254 East 34th (1962), 895 East 51st (1983) and 3145 West 13th (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 505 Cardero and 520 Richards, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
