What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a chauffeur, a clerk, a forest engineer, a janitor, a lineman and an on active service, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Kitsilano, Marpole and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C G Dunham, a forest engineer, at 736 Granville Street. L E Dunham is listed at 8730 Heather Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lloyd E Dunham there as the householder, a lineman. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Isobel Dunham at 969 Jervis Street.

In 1940 the directory lists C G Dunham at 955 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists Clair G Dunham there as the householder, a forest engineer. The 1940 name section lists Roy C Dunham at 2966 West 10th Avenue, a janitor. The 1940 name section lists Perry S Dunham at 4084 West 10th Avenue, on active service.

In 1940 the directory lists A L Dunham at 936 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alex L Dunham there as the householder, a packer at Woodward's, with Marjorie Dunham, a clerk at M-W Ltd. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Dunham at 2634 West 37th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Annie H Dunham there as the householder, widow of F G.

The 1940 name section lists Russell E Dunham at 1521 West 8th Avenue, a chauffeur at Safe-Way Taxi.

Today

736 Granville, 955 Thurlow, 2966 West 10th, 4084 West 10th and 936 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946, 936 West 14th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 8730 Heather (1959), 969 Jervis (1980) and 2634 West 37th (2005) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1521 West 8th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
