The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists P J Duke at 5578 Culloden Street. A E Duke is listed at 5962 Cypress Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). In 1940 the directory lists W T Duke at 785 East 49th Avenue. R A Duke is listed at 3402 Heather Street in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists J E Duke at 7626 Hudson Street. Miss G Duke is listed at 855 Thurlow Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists A E Duke at 4293 West 10th Avenue. J H Duke is listed at 20 West 14th Avenue in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists A J D Duke at 475 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. T Duke is listed at 163 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too.
Today
5578 Culloden, 3402 Heather, 7626 Hudson, 855 Thurlow, 4293 West 10th and 475 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946, 855 Thurlow on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 5962 Cypress, 785 East 49th and 163 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 20 West 14th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

The book of the Dukes

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
