What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a bookkeeper, a cook, a dietary, an investigator, an operator and a stage operator, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver General Hospital. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview (2), Kitsilano (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists D Duffy at 205 Abbott Street, with N Duffy. W Duffy is listed at 2527 Dundas Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Walter Duffy there as the householder, a cook. The 1940 name section lists James Duffy at 41 East Hastings Street.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E M Duffy at 3005 Heather Street. The 1940 name section lists Ethel M Duffy there as the householder, widow of E J, with Bert Duffy, a dietary at the Vancouver General Hospital, and Leonore Duffy, a stenographer at the Industrial Acceptance Corporation. The 1940 name section lists James R Duffy at 2035 West 49th Avenue, retired.

D Duffy is listed at 3106 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Decimus Duffy there as the householder, a stage operator at BC Motor Transportation, with Gladys G Duffy, an operator at the BC Telephone. P B Duffy is listed at 4513 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists P Bennett Duffy there as the householder, an investigator at the Canadian Government.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Barbara C Duffy at 1300 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Veronica E Duffy at 1948 Whyte Avenue, a bookkeeper for Northwestern Mutual.

Today

2035 West 49th and 1948 Whyte still have their buildings from before 1946; 2527 Dundas (1986), 41 East Hastings (2017) and 3005 Heather (1999) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 205 Abbott, 3106 West 4th, 4513 West 7th and 1300 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
