What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a laborer (2), a fitter, a machinist helper, a moulder, a musician and an on active service. Three of them worked for Milbourne Dickson Foundry.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Renfrew-Collingwood (3), Fairview (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Shaughnessy and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists A Joseph Dolman at 1818 Barclay Street, on active service. C E Dolman is listed at 1611 Cedar Crescent in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists D D Dolman at 4541 Elgin Street. The 1940 name section lists Don D Dolman there as the householder, a moulder at the Milbourne Dickson Foundry.

In 1940 the directory lists A Dolman at 3035 Horley Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur Dolman there as the householder, a laborer at the Milbourne Dickson Foundry. In 1940 the directory lists A V Dolman at 4595 Joyce Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Albert V Dolman there as the householder, a machinist helper at the CNR, with Llyod Dolman, a fitter at the Milbourne Dickson Foundry.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A G Dolman at 1730 Pine Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Alice G Dolman there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists G Dolman at 4844 Rupert Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Dolman there as the householder, a laborer.

The 1940 name section lists Paul Dolman at 764 West 13th Avenue, a musician.

Today

1611 Cedar Crescent still has its building from before 1946, dated 1924 by the City's record; 4541 Elgin (1998) and 3035 Horley (1973) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1818 Barclay, 4595 Joyce, 1730 Pine, 4844 Rupert and 764 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
