The Dilworths

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses

The directories print twelve people named Dilworth at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dilworths at 1356 Nanton in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: a barber, a millworker, a music teacher, a police officer, a regional representative and a secretary. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), West End (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R Dilworth, a barber, at 1092 Davie Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Roger Dilworth there, a barber. The 1940 name section lists George N Dilworth at 2745 East 29th Avenue, a millworker at BC Plywoods.

I Dilworth is listed at 1356 Nanton Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ira Dilworth there as the householder, a regional representative at the CBC, with Elizabeth Dilworth, widow of J, and Phylis E Dilworth, a music teacher. Mrs N B Dilworth is listed at 115 North Kootenay Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Nettie B Dilworth there as the householder, widow of W J, with Russell G Dilworth, a police officer at the BC Government.

Mrs M J Dilworth is listed at 859 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary J Dilworth there as the householder, widow of G. J Dilworth, a baker, is listed at 5616 Victoria Drive in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists J Dilworth at 5618 Victoria Drive.

The 1940 name section lists John Dilworth at 2275 West 11th Avenue, with Mrs Thelma Dilworth, a secretary at Associated Financial Brokers.

Today

115 North Kootenay, 859 Thurlow and 5616 Victoria Drive still have their buildings from before 1946, 859 Thurlow on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2745 East 29th (2020) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1092 Davie, 1356 Nanton, 5618 Victoria Drive and 2275 West 11th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
