The Dills

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses

The directories print eleven people named Dill at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dills at 2466 West 6th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: an artist, an assistant, a civil engineer, a dressmaker, a logger and a manager, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F B Dill at 4180 Crown Crescent; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). Miss V E Dill, a dressmaker, is listed at 571 Howe Street in 1940. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Aug Dill at 296 Keefer Street, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Robert M Dill at 2296 Kitchener Street, a seaman.

The 1940 name section lists Charles W Dill at 1935 West 12th Avenue, a civil engineer. A O Dill is listed at 3466 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arnott O Dill there as the householder.

C J Dill is listed at 3350 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Cedric J Dill there as the householder, a salesman at the Royal Securities Corporation. E W Dill is listed at 3978 West 30th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edwin W Dill there as the householder, an artist at Vancouver Engineers.

J C Dill is listed at 2466 West 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John C Dill there as the householder, a manager at J C Dill Construction, with Charlotte E Dill, an assistant at UBC, and Viola E Dill, a dressmaker.

Today

4180 Crown Crescent, 571 Howe, 2296 Kitchener, 1935 West 12th, 3466 West 15th, 3978 West 30th and 2466 West 6th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2466 West 6th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3350 West 1st (1987) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 296 Keefer, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
