The Dees

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses

The directories print eleven people named Dee at six addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: five Dees at 3529 West 1st in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: a stenographer (3), a bookkeeper, a clerk, a longshoreman, an on active service and a salesman, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (4), Fairview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L L Dee at 2030 Arbutus Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Lily L Dee there as the householder, widow of F W, with Dorothy Dee, a stenographer. The 1940 name section lists Richard W Dee at 2414 Cornwall Avenue, a serviceman at Felt & Tarrant. The 1940 name section lists Ethel J A Dee at 1454 Pendrell Street, a bookkeeper at Copp The Shoe Man.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H Dee at 3529 West 1st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Helena Dee there as the householder, widow of A C, with Charles M Dee, a salesman at Pemberton & Son, Dorothy E Dee, a stenographer at H R MacMillan Export, Leslie J W Dee, a clerk at the Customs, and Noreen Dee, a stenographer at Confederation Life. In 1940 the directory lists A J Dee at 3582 West 4th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Arthur J Dee there as the householder, on active service.

The 1940 name section lists William T Dee at 1724 West Broadway, a longshoreman.

Today

1454 Pendrell (1968) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2030 Arbutus, 2414 Cornwall, 3529 West 1st, 3582 West 4th and 1724 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
