A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Daniels
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at six addresses
The directories print ten people named Daniel at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Daniell. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Daniels at 3403 West 1st in 1940.

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Riley Park, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs H V Daniell, rooms to let, at 2050 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Hazel V Daniell there, widow of O C, with Peter D Daniell, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal. In 1940 the directory lists H Daniel at 82 East 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harry Daniel there as the householder, a yard foreman at the CPR, with Joan Daniel, a saleswoman at Woolworths.
In 1940 the directory lists W Daniel at 4 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter Daniel there as the householder, a carpenter, with William N Daniel, a yardman at the CPR. The 1940 name section lists James Daniel at 1157 East Cordova Street.
F L Daniel is listed at 3403 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick L Daniel there as the householder, a jeweller at BC Collateral Loan, with John C Daniel, a manager at the Barnes Service, and Rex G Daniel, a clerk at the City of Vancouver. J Daniel is listed at 4076 West 31st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Daniel there as the householder, a chief operator at the Radio Branch Canadian Government, with James Daniel Jr.
Today
82 East 40th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1910 by the City's record; 3403 West 1st (1976) and 4076 West 31st (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2050 Barclay, 4 East 44th and 1157 East Cordova, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
