What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: an electrician, a helper, a motorman, a proprietor, a saleswoman and a waiter. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Grandview-Woodland (2), Fairview, Kerrisdale, Riley Park, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Eva G Daley at 6050 Balsam Street, widow of A H. F E Daley is listed at 4564 Bellevue Drive in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). In 1940 the directory lists W C Daley at 2127 Charles Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William C Daley there as the householder, an electrician at the Vancouver Hotel.

In 1940 the directory lists F Dalley, in tobacco and billiards, at 728 Davie Street. The 1940 name section lists John Daley at 923 East Pender Street. In 1940 the directory lists W T Daley at 2366 Kitchener Street. The 1940 name section lists William T Daley there as the householder, a helper at Hume & Rumble.

In 1940 the directory lists R J Daley at 4353 Quebec Street. The 1940 name section lists R John Daley there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M J Dalley at 1725 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Martha J Dalley there as the householder, widow of J R, with Ethel E Dalley, a saleswoman at Saba Bros.

In 1940 the directory lists J Dailey at 1123 West Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists Jack Dailey there as the householder, a waiter for Scotts Cafe, with Mrs Mae Dailey, proprietor of Lil-Li-Bet.

Today

2127 Charles, 2366 Kitchener and 4353 Quebec still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 6050 Balsam, 4564 Bellevue Drive, 728 Davie, 923 East Pender, 1725 West 10th and 1123 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
