What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 15: an on active service (2), an attendant, a building contractor, a clerk, a detective and a piano tuner, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown (2), Strathcona (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Riley Park, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In April 1929 Dr R G Cuthbert took out the permit to build a house at 3391 Arbutus Street. In 1940 the directory lists R G Cuthbert at 3391 Arbutus Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert G Cuthbert there as the householder, proprietor of the Fourth Avenue Vet Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Ralph Cuthbert at 1270 Burrard Street, an attendant at Marine Garage.

G Cuthbert is listed at 914 Drake Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Cuthbert there as the householder. W Cuthbert is listed at 957 East 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Walter Cuthbert there as the householder, a piano tuner.

The 1940 name section lists Charles G Cuthbert at 1050 Nicola Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists J Cuthbert at 788 Powell Street. The 1940 name section lists J Cuthbert at 536 Prior Street, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists S Cuthbert at 1626 Stephens Street. The 1940 name section lists Stewart Cuthbert there as the householder, on active service. In 1940 the directory lists C C Cuthbert at 4416 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Cyril C Cuthbert there as the householder, a salesman at J W Kelly Piano.

W Cuthbert is listed at 1820 West 5th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Cuthbert there as the householder, retired.

Today

3391 Arbutus, 3449 West 2nd and 3707 West 34th still have their buildings from before 1946; 957 East 29th (1971), 1050 Nicola (1996), 536 Prior (1992), 4416 West 10th (1999) and 186 West 23rd (2010) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1270 Burrard, 914 Drake, 788 Powell, 1626 Stephens and 1820 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 2005 West 49th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
